Class Details

Participants must be 18 years of age or older. Training is conducted in an informal atmosphere. Traditional martial arts uniforms are not worn. Participants should wear CLEAN athletic shoes and comfortable attire appropriate for defensive tactics training in a group setting. Training knives are provided. Repetitions are practiced with a partner in close proximity so good hygiene and deodorant are a must! Please do not attend class if you are sick. Rings with sharp edges or stones, wrist watches, and bracelets must be removed. Fingernails should be trimmed short. To maximize time for learning and developing skill proficiency, class time is dedicated to practicing empty-hand defense techniques and is not filled with calisthenics or organized stretching so participants should arrive at class already stretched and ready to train.

Physical Activity Advisory

The majority of this training consists of repetitive arm movements involving light to moderate physical contact with a training partner as participants learn to reprogram their startle flinch response to be able to parry and block knife attacks from various angles by practicing "flow drills" and is not recommended for people who's arms bruise easily or for those with shoulder problems. Participants also learn how to trap and capture an opponent's attacking arm and should be agile and limber enough to be comfortable with having joint locks, off-balancing techniques, and takedowns applied to them in a controlled, non-competitive manner. This training is not recommended for people that have difficulty maintaining their balance or that are highly susceptible to fall-related injuries. This training is not recommended for people with heart conditions as it also incorporates short bouts of intense cardiovascular/combat conditioning drills such as punching focus mitts and applying kicks and knee strikes to kicking pads.
